History
On June 6, 1961, Pope John XXIII issued the bull “Candida Christi,” which established the Diocese of Bururi, separating it from the Archdiocese of Gitega . On the same day, the Diocese of Bururi entered the Metropolitanate of Gitega. On April 13, 1973, the Diocese of Bururi transferred part of its territory for the construction of the new Diocese of Ruyigi .
On November 25, 2006, the Diocese of Bururi entered the Metropolitanate of Bujumbura.
On January 17, 2009, the Diocese of Bururi transferred part of its territory for the construction of the new Diocese of Rutana .
