The Archdiocese of Bujumbura ( Latin: Arcidioecesis Buiumburaensis ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in the city of Bujumbura , Burundi . The dioceses of Bubanza and Bururi are included in the metropolis of Bujumbura. The Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Bujumbura is the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary .

History
On June 11, 1959, Pope John XXIII issued the bull Cum sacrum , which was established by the Apostolic Vicariate of Usumbura, distinguishing it from the Apostolic Vicariates of Kitegi (today - the Archdiocese of Gitegi ) and Ngozi (today - the Diocese of Ngozi ).
On November 10, 1959, Pope John XXIII issued the bull Cum parvulum , which transformed the Apostolic Vicariate of Usumbura into a diocese.
On October 9, 1964, the Diocese of Usumbura was renamed the Diocese of Bujumbura.
On June 7, 1980, the Diocese of Bujumbura transferred part of its territory for the construction of a new diocese of Bubanza .
On November 25, 2006, the Diocese of Bujumbura was elevated to the rank of archdiocese.
