Aloben

Detail of the Nestorian stele artifact that mentions Aloben

Aloben ( Chinese 阿羅 本 , pinyin : Āluóběn, Middle Chinese : Alapuən X , also “Aleben”, “Aluoben”, “Olopen”, “Olopan” or “Olopuen”) is the legendary missionary who first brought Nestorianism to China. He was a missionary from the Church of the East (also known as the Nestorian Church) and probably Syro-speaking from the Persian Empire or Syria in the Byzantine Empire. According to the inscription on the Nestorian stele , he arrived from Persia to China in 635 and was awarded an audience with the emperor Tai-tzong . He ordered Aloben to translate Christian texts into Chinese for his library. The result of literary activity of Aloben is considered the Canon of Jesus the Messiah and other Nestorian texts in Chinese.
