Sergey Sergeevich Lappo (March 27, 1938 , Moscow - January 5, 2006 , Moscow) - Soviet and Russian scientist- oceanologist , teacher. Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences (1981), professor (1987), corresponding member of RAS (2000). Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation (1999). Director of the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1995-2006). One of the largest domestic scientists in the field of physical oceanography and the interaction of the ocean and atmosphere . The author of about 200 scientific papers, including 5 monographs.

Biography
In 1960 he graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University .
In 1960-1963, he was a junior researcher at the State Oceanographic Institute (GOIN) of the Main Directorate of the Hydrometeorological Service under the USSR Council of Ministers .
In 1962-1966 he studied as a volunteer at the evening department for engineers of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University . At the same time he worked at the Department of Sea and Land Physics of the Physics Department of Moscow State University (1963-1970), where he graduated from graduate school in 1966. Since 1966 - candidate of physical and mathematical sciences .
In 1972-1980 - Head of the Laboratory, Deputy Director for Science of the Sakhalin Integrated Research Institute of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Sciences . Since 1974 - head of the scientific school "The role of the ocean in climate fluctuations."
In 1981-1988 - Head of the GOIN Laboratory, in 1988-1993 - Director of the GOIN, from 1994 - Head. Department of Oceanology, Moscow State University.
From 1993 - Deputy Director, and from 1995 to 2006 - Director of the P. P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences.
He participated in the expeditions of the USSR State Committee for Hydrometeorology and the USSR Academy of Sciences in the Atlantic (1959, 1960-1965) and Indian (1967) oceans. He took part in the 40th voyage of the research vessel Vityaz .
He died on January 5, 2006. He was buried in Moscow at the Khovansky cemetery (Central Territory, plot 23) [1] .
