Biography
Giovanni Ettore Mattei was born in Castelfranco Emilia on March 10, 1865 .
Mattei was born into the family of engineer Samuel di Lucca and Julia Bandera. After taking part in the Austro-Italo-French War in 1859 , his father devoted himself to agriculture . From an early age, Mattei had the opportunity to observe nature and began to collect collections of insects and birds . In 1884, he entered the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Bologna , where he focused on the study of botany and gathered a rich herbarium .
Giovanni Ettore Mattei died in the commune of Shara on December 19, 1943 .
Scientific activity
Giovanni Ettore Mattei specialized in seed plants [1] . He described more than 130 plant species, most of which were described for the first time [2] . He was the director of the botanical garden in Messina. He was engaged not only in botany: in his villa he made a model of an airplane and was interested in air navigation.
It was Mattei who described the Sicilian fir .
