The 6th National Football Championship of Kazakhstan , in which 14 clubs took part.

The champion title was defended by Taraz ( Zhambyl ). After last season, the Miners left the Premier League, Koksha , Munaishy , Kaynar , Tobol and SKIF-Ordabasy , instead they played Avtomobilist .

Rules

According to the regulations, the competitions were held in two circles. The number of teams in the championship was 14. The team, which took 14th place, flies to the First League.

Seating in the event of a tie points

In case of equality of points for two or more teams, their places (except the first) in the final table of the championship and in the final table of the first stage are determined by the following criteria:

The greatest number of victories in all matches;
The greatest number of goals scored;
Difference of goals scored and conceded;

Asian Cup Participation

As a result of the championship, the first-place team received the right to participate in the Asian Champions Cup 1998/1999 season.

Winner of the Kazakhstan Cup 1996/1997 - received the right to participate in the Cup Winners Cup of the Asian Cup season 1997/1998.
