Compton Mackenzie ( English Edward Montague Compton Mackenzie , January 17, 1883 , West Hartlepool, County Durham - November 30, 1972 , Edinburgh ) is a Scottish writer who wrote in English.

Biography
From a hereditary theater family, the actors were his grandfather, father and mother (his two sisters, Viola and Fay Compton, became actresses). He graduated from Oxford University , received a degree in recent history. He made his debut in the novel "Sir in Gray" (1907). He became famous for his autobiographical two-volume novel of education “Foul Street” (1913-1914, filmed in 1922). In 1914 he adopted Catholicism . During the war he participated in the Dardanelles operation , worked for British intelligence .
In the 1920s he lived in Capri , where his wife began an affair with pianist Renata Borgatti (Mackenzie described their connection in the satirical novel “Extraordinary Women”, 1928). In 1923 he became one of the founders of the classic music magazine Gramophone .
He built a house in Scotland, on the island of Barra , in which he spent the majority of his life. He acted as a Scottish nationalist, was one of the founders of the Scottish National Party . He served as rector of the University of Glasgow . He wrote for the famous newspaper Daily Mail . He headed the Croquet Fans Association (1953-1966), the Club of Siamese Cats Lovers, etc. He left the 12-volume autobiography "My Life and My Time" (1963-1971).

Movie Jobs
Several of his novels were filmed; he acted in these films as a screenwriter. Based on the novel “Sylvia Scarlett” (continuation of “Fel Street”), the film of the same name by George Cukor ( 1935 ) was staged, starring Catherine Hepburn and Carey Grant .
Impact and recognition
His early prose was praised by Henry James and Max Beerboom . He influenced F.S. Fitzgerald (especially noticeable in the novel “ On This Side of Paradise ”, 1920 ). Pupils read his novels with enthusiasm by George Orwell and Cyril Connolly .
