History

The cape was first described in August 1778 by the English explorer James Cook and named by him the North Cape (“northern cape”), since it was the northernmost of the points he reached. The local name of this cape is Ir-Kappeya (translated from Chukot. "Walrus constipation") - recorded in 1823 by the Russian navigator Ferdinand Petrovich Wrangel . In 1934, the cape was renamed in honor of the outstanding Soviet polar explorer Otto Yulievich Schmidt .

Archeology

On the coast of Cape Schmidt, a Neolithic site of ancient sea hunters was discovered. The remains of ancient dugouts have been preserved at the western foot of the Kozhevnikov cliff, on top of which there was an ancient Chukchi fortress [3] .

Notes

Comments
  1. ↑ In some publications, the name is indicated simply as Cape Schmidt , which is wrong: the name of the scientist included in the name allows us to distinguish it from Cape Schmidt in the Kara Sea, named after academician F. B. Schmidt.
