Story
The early years of the Republic of China , a town in northern China.
A girl named Jin Lianhua (whose name literally means "golden lotus" or "golden lotus flower") earns a living by herself and her adoptive mother by singing in a teahouse.
The heir to the wealthy family, who studied in the city, Cheng Qingyu falls in love with Lianhua; touched by his fervent confession, the girl reciprocates him. However, at the insistence of his father, Qingyu was forced to marry the daughter of another wealthy Shen Shuven family. Not wanting to deceive his wife, Cheng Qingyu talks about love for another girl; the much more timid Shuven grieves, but remains faithful to her husband and does not try to fight for her love.
Cousin Qingyu, knowing of his ongoing meetings with a commoner, tells his father about this. In an anger from the son’s criminal love for the songwriter, the young man’s father makes him catch up and tries to eliminate the hindrance by hiring people to beat Lianhua or seduce her. Thinking that his father learned about everything from his daughter-in-law, Qingyu begins to completely ignore and boycott his wife. Not knowing the reason for his relationship, she becomes depressed and falls ill.
The same cousin, having found Jin Lianhua, asks her to leave Cheng Qingyu to save Shuven. Unable to refuse, the girl agrees in tears and leaves the city; however, this does not help her "rival", in the end, dying of grief, abandoned by her husband. Qingyu rebels against the family and escapes after Lianhua. Having experienced many misadventures, lovers find their happiness [1] [2] .
