Biography

His full name is Abu Isa Muhammad ibn Isa ibn Sura ibn al-Dahhak al-Sulami at-Tirmizi. Was born in 824 in the city of Termez (modern Uzbekistan ). He was educated in Khorasan , Bukhara , and also acquired knowledge from representatives of Iraqi and Hijaz theological schools. He was distinguished by an excellent memory and knew by heart tens of thousands of hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad . His teachers were such prominent Islamic theologians of the time: al-Bukhari , Muslim , Muhammad ibn Abdullah, Ali ibn Hajar, Suweid ibn Nasr and others. [2] During his travels in search of hadiths he met such famous people of that time as Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Abu Dawood , and also visited Iraq and Hijaz.

Hadith Classifications

Before Abu Isa at-Tirmizi, hadiths were divided mainly into reliable (sahih) and weak (daif). Engaged in hadith studies, he first formulated and developed the concepts of “hasan” (good hadith) and “garib” (hadith, which were transmitted not by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, but by other persons) [2] .

Jami at-Tirmisi

The most famous work of al-Tirmizi is a collection of hadiths “al-Jami”, or “Sunan at-Tirmizi”. His collection is one of the six most authoritative Sunni collections of hadith ( Qutub al-Sitt ). In accordance with the principles of Islamic law, 3962 Hadiths contained in the Sunan are systematized in chapters. All hadiths are classified as “reliable” ( sahih ), “good” (hasan) and “weak” ( daif ) [2] .

A lot of comments have been written on Sunan, the most famous of which are the comments of Abu Bakr ibn al-Arabi “Arida al-Ahwazi”, the comments of al-Suyuti “Gutul-mugtazi” and the comments of Safi al-Rahman al-Mubarakfuri (1941-2006 ) "Tohvat l-ahvaz."

Expression of famous people about Imam at-Tirmisi

  • “I benefited more from talking to you than you benefited from learning with me.” ( Al-Bukhari )
  • "When Imam al-Bukhari passed away, he did not leave anyone in Khorasan who could compare with Abu Isa at-Tirmizi in knowledge, memory, piety and abstinence." ( Moussa ibn Alak )
  • “At the time when Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari died, I lived in Khorasan. After him there was no support in the field of science, in the cause of asceticism, except for Abu Isa (Tirmidhi). Tirmizi shed many tears, subsequently lost his sight and lived for many years ”( Al-Hakim Abu Ahmad )
