Biography

Lefter was born into a family of a fisherman and a dressmaker. His parents were Greeks [1] . Had 10 brothers and sisters. He grew up in Istanbul and started playing football at the local Taksim club.

He was buried in the Greek Orthodox cemetery in Buyukada .

Career

Club

Playing for Taksim, Lefter rapidly progressed. In 1947, he already played well enough to go to Fenerbahçe . And in 1951, he became the first Turkish footballer to leave to play abroad. He spent the 1951/1952 season in Italy, speaking for Fiorentina , and in 1952/1953. already played for Nice . Then he returned to Fenerbahçe and in the very first season after his return became the top scorer of the Turkish Super League . He later won three league titles as part of the club: in 1959, 1961 and 1964. For 615 matches held over his entire career with Fenerbahce, Lefter scored 423 goals, becoming a true legend of the club. After completing a football career in Turkey, Lefter played for the Greek AEK for one season. He only managed to enter the field 5 times as part of a new team before the injury he received in the match against Iraklis forced Lefter to finally finish his playing career.

Team

Lefter Kucukandoniadis made his national debut in April 1948 in a friendly match against Greece , in which he scored a goal. In August of the same year, he took part in the Olympic Games in London . Confidently defeating China in the first match, the Turkish team then stumbled on the Yugoslavs .

In the qualifying match for the 1950 World Cup, Lefter scored a goal against Syria , but subsequently Turkey withdrew from the competition, despite the fact that she had already reached the final part of the tournament.

The Turkish team brought success to the 1954 World Cup in a three-match confrontation with the Spaniards. Having won at home once and tied in a neutral field, the teams trusted in the will of the lot, which favored the Turkish team. In the games of the final tournament, Lefter scored 2 goals: one against the goal of South Korea , and the other against Germany . Despite this, the Turks failed to leave the group.

After the World Cup in Switzerland, Lefter played for the national team for more than a year. He participated in many friendlies, qualifiers for the 1960 European Championships and the 1962 World Cup . In total, Lefter spent 46 matches for the national team during his career, scoring 21 goals [2] .
