History
The half-wall was a border fortress as part of the Pereyaslavl principality and was located on the right bank of the Uday River. It was first mentioned in the Kiev Chronicle under 1125 by the name of Pälkastѣn. The chronicle tells of the victory over the Polovtsy , won in the vicinity of Polkosten by Pereyaslav Prince Yaropolk Vladimirovich . Perhaps, before the construction of the fortress, a glade settlement existed in its place. The decline of the city dates back to the 13th century , which allows us to connect it with the consequences of the Batu invasion .
Settlement
The ancient settlement with dimensions of 120 × 110 m and an area of 1 hectare, as well as a settlement with an area of 13 hectares are located in the tract of Burt near the consonant village of Povstin in the Poltava region . On three sides, except the north, facing the river, the settlement is surrounded by a rampart and a moat. The cultural layer of the settlement contains deposits of Old Russian time of the late 11th – 13th centuries. Nearby is an open settlement of the same period. Currently - a monument of archeology of local importance.
The ancient settlement was investigated at the end of the 19th century by V. G. Lyaskoronsky , in 1971 by M. P. Kucheroy and O. V. Sukhobokov , in 1981 and 1988 by Yu. Yu. Morgunov . Finds from the settlement of Polkosten are stored in the Poltava Museum of Local Lore .
