Moss cracked ( lat. Xerocoméllus chrysénteron ) is an edible mushroom of the genus Xerocomellus . Previously belonged to the genus Mokhovik ( Xerocomus ), currently divided into several smaller genera.

The cap diameter is 3–7 cm (up to 10 cm), the cap has a convex or pillow shape, sometimes depressed in the center, dry, matte, velvety or bare, the color of the cap is maroon-red, brown, olive-brown, brown, brown-red, ocher-gray (sometimes two forms are distinguished - red and brown). A characteristic feature is a mesh cracking cap, cracks may have a pink tint.
The flesh is whitish or yellowish, reddish at the base of the leg and under the skin of the cap, intensely turning blue on the cut.
The tubular layer is large-pore, adhered to the leg, the tubules are creamy yellow, ocher-yellow, sulfur-yellowish-green or olive-yellow, later olive, cut or blue when pressed.
The stem is 4–10 cm tall and 1–2 cm thick, club-shaped, solid (later it may be hollow), smooth, darkly fissured, finely scalloped at the top, with slightly visible gray-fibrous belts at the bottom, light yellow in color, red at the bottom.
Yellow-brown or yellowish-olive spore powder , spores of 14 × 5 µm, spindle-shaped.
Europe , the European part of Russia , the North Caucasus , the Far East . Occurs in deciduous and mixed , and sometimes in coniferous forests on well-loosened acidic soils. With deciduous trees forms mycorrhiza (often with beech ). Rather common view.
The season is July - September (in large quantities - from the second half of August to the first decade of September).
Edible , in dishes has a mucous consistency, therefore considered mediocre. It is better to use young mushrooms. It can be consumed fresh and salted, as well as dried or frozen and then consumed in fried dishes or soups.
