Life and work

J. Gipstein was born in British Palestine in the family of a rabbi and a Kabbalist, a deeply religious person. In 1946-1949 he studied art at the Bezalel School of Art under the direction of Mordecai Ardon . Continues his education at the Johannes Itten School of Applied Arts in Zurich - as does M. Ardon, a follower of the German Constructivist Bauhaus school. During this period, J. Agam was influenced by the aesthetic and mathematical theory of art developed by Max Bill . In 1951, the artist came to Paris and still lives there. He has a daughter and two sons, one of which is photographer Ron Agam [4] . In Paris, J. Agam is engaged in the Workshop of Abstract Art (Atelier d'art abstrait) and the Academy de la Grand Chaumiere . In 1953, his first solo exhibition was held in the Paris gallery Craven. In 1955, Y. Agam took part in the first international exhibition of kinetic art at the Denis René Gallery in Paris. In 1964, he exhibited at the international exhibition of contemporary art documenta III in Kassel.

Since the beginning of the 1950s, Y. Agam has shown interest in various kinetic and mechanical elements and the possibility of their use in creating works of art. So there were his works of sound and tangible paintings that change from touch, as well as works in which light, sound and water elements are connected (for example, the sound fountain La Defense , in Paris, 1976). The artist often uses acrylic paints in his works, opening up great opportunities for the transfer of lighting effects and color transparency.

The artist is in constant search of new forms for artistic expression, linking art and technology, shape and color. He creates in the style of op-art embossed, perforated, fan-shaped canvases, allowing the observer to discover something new constantly in these works, to become for himself the “pioneer” of the work of art.
