The temple is the main attraction of Baijnath. It was built in 1204 at the expense of two local merchants - Ahuk and Manyuk. [1] On two long inscriptions at the entrance to the temple building it is written that the temple of Shiva also existed at the site of its construction.
The temple building is an example of the medieval temple architecture of northern India Nagara [1] . The temple is surrounded by a wall with entrances from the south and north.
Opposite the entrance to the main building of the temple is a statue of a bull Nandi . On the walls of the temple there are numerous images of Hindu deities. The main sanctuary is Shiva-lingam in the form of Swayambhu ( Svayambhu in Sanskrit - “self-arising”). [one]
The temple is a place of pilgrimage and tourism.
