Biography and scientific career

He graduated from the Lyceum of Louis the Great ( 1921 ), Ecole Normal ( 1924 ). Under the leadership of Emile Braye, he specialized in late antique philosophy, neo-platonism , hermetic teachings . Head of research in École pratique des Hautes Études , secretary of the section of religious sciences (1934–1950), president of this section (1950–1962). Secretary of the editorial board, then co-editor and chief editor of the magazine Revue de l'Histoire des Religions . Vice-President of the International Association of Researchers of Religion (1950-1965). Professor Collège de France (Department of the History of Religions, 1952 - 1972 ).
