Biography
Born in Manchester , was adopted by the Pentecostal family who lived in Akrington, Lancashire . Foster parents hoped that she would become a Christian missionary , and as a teenager she went home with sermons . At 16, she told her parents that she was a lesbian and left home. In preparation for the final exams for the high school course, she worked in the evenings and at weekends. During the year before entering university, she worked in a psychiatric hospital to earn money for study. Having entered Oxford University , she studied English and literature at St. Catherine's College. After she moved to London , her first autobiographical novel, “Besides Oranges, There Are Other Fruits” (“Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit”) was published when the author was 26 years old. The story was awarded the Whitebred Prize for Best First Book in 1985, and the Winterson screenplay was awarded the British Television Prize ( BAFTA ) for the best television show in the drama genre.
While the first novel by Janet Winterson is written in the genre of realism , her later works relate to the genre of magical realism and explore the boundaries of the physical and real worlds, the sexual identity of the sexes.
Winterson books have been awarded several literary prizes. She was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services in literary work in 2006 .
Her friend for 12 years, until 2000 , was Peggy Reynolds ( English Peggy Reynolds ), a scientist and radio host of the BBC [4] .
