Biography

From 1841, he was an opposition deputy elected to the Chamber of Deputies after the death of his brother and taking a modest place in the ranks of the moderate opposition, significantly inferior to the deceased in talent, but looking like him with honesty of character and conviction.

After the February Revolution of 1848 , in which he took an active part, he became mayor of Paris, in March-June - Minister of Finance. To save the state from imminent bankruptcy , without resorting to the issuance of paper money , to a compulsory loan or confiscation of Orleans' property, he decided to raise taxes , which dealt a heavy blow to his popularity.

In early May, he was elected one of five members of the executive committee ; after her fall as a member of the constituent assembly did not cease to fight against the reaction. Due to his growing unpopularity, his candidature to the legislative assembly had no success, and he was long forced to abandon his political role.

In 1864, he reappeared in the legislative body , in the ranks of the opposition, but he was more concerned with financial matters and foreign policy.

From September 4, 1870 a member of the government of national defense ; outstanding role did not play and was not elected to the national assembly .
