Angel in heraldry

Archangel Michael on the coat of arms of Kiev

Angel is one of the most popular figures in heraldry . It is usually used as a shield holder , although it is often found as a coat of arms [1] [2] .

Description

According to A.B. Lakier , among the natural figures “in the coat of arms depicted”, the angels and cherubs assigned the main role [1] . The cherub is depicted as a human head or angel, with two wings; the seraphim has three pairs of wings (one of them is above , the other is under the head, at each of them both wings intersect each other in the shape of an oblique cross ) [3] .

According to A. Fox-Davis , angels, although they often appear in the guise of shield holders, are relatively rarely used as coat of arms. Much more often [as coat of arms] there are cherubim [4] .

Shape Spread

England

The appearance of angelic figures (probably in the form of "guardian angels" of the emblem shields ) was in full accord with the atmosphere of the first days of English heraldry . In time, this process coincided with the beginning of the systematic use of shield holders. The latter in the form of angels are found on many Gothic buildings . They appear in seals ; So, on the seal of Henry Grosmont (c. 1350) above the heraldic shield you can see the figure of an angel [5] .

Germany

In Germany, “celestial figures” [3] , including “angels with luxurious curls,” are often found as shield holders since the 15th century. Chronologically, they are preceded by figures of people and animals (the latter from the 2nd half of the 14th century) [6] .

Use

Cities and Regions

Coat of arms of Minsk on the press of the 16th or 17th century

Since the end of the 16th century, the image of the coat of arms of Minsk has been known. The city received its coat of arms in 1591, according to the privilege [7] of the Polish king and Grand Duke of Lithuania Zhigimont Vazy [8] . The scene of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary was chosen as a heraldic plot. Along with the figure of the Virgin , the coat of arms depicts the surrounding angels and cherubim [7] .

Coat of arms of the Arkhangelsk province (1878)

The appearance of the arms of Arkhangelsk and a number of other cities is associated with the military reforms of Peter I. The regiments, housed in provinces and provinces , received names by cities, the coats of arms of which, in turn, were placed on regimental banners . Since many Russian cities at that time did not have their own emblems, it was necessary to “compose” them.

The image of the coat of arms of Arkhangelsk ("the archangel on the horse, defeating the devil") is first found on the banner of the Arkhangelsk Regiment in 1712. By the beginning of the reign of Anna Ivanovna, the “horse” was removed from the coat of arms [9] . The coat of arms of the Arkhangelsk province was approved in 1878.

Corporate, Military, and Personal

Angels are still found in the image of heraldic and hereditary shield holders: for example, they can be seen on the arms of the Marquis of Waterford, Count Dudley , Viscount Dillon . [ten]

Fictional coats of arms

M. Pasturo in one of his books gives an example of a “fictional” coat of arms [11] - a fragment of a medieval carpet with the heraldry of Chastity , on whose shield an angel is depicted [12] .
