Biography

From the age of 10 he sang in the choir of the boys in the Paris -Saint-Eustache church under the leadership of Antoine Ponschard , who became his first teacher. At the insistence of his parents, he initially refused from a musical career, in his free time playing the violin in a street orchestra, but already in 1823 the mass of his composition was performed in the Parisian church of Saint-Roch. In 1825, Elvar finally entered the Paris Conservatory , where among his teachers was, in particular, Francois Joseph Feti .

Received in 1830, the first prize in the class of fugues, he became an assistant to Antonin Reihi in the class of composition, working in that capacity until 1834 , when he was awarded the Rome Prize , which meant a long internship in Rome. Returning to Paris in 1837, Elvar received the position of professor of composition [4] and held him until 1871 ; among his students, in particular, Theodore Gouvy .

Creativity

Elvar was primarily known as the author of Mass , oratorios , cantatas and other choral works, but left several operas, a number of works for orchestra.

He also owns textbooks of harmony, counterpoint and instrumentation, a biographical sketch of Gilbert Dupre (1838).

In 1873, Elvar received the Order of the Legion of Honor , noting at a ceremony in the conservatory: “Long live the Republic! I wrote a cantata in honor of Charles X and did not receive the award, I sang the virtues of Louis Philippe in music and did not receive the award, I praised the empire and was not awarded the emperor, but I did not do anything for the Republic - and now I receive this award from it. ”
