Tournament History
Calendar Place
The vacancy in the WTA tour calendar, which the Texas competition took in 2011, formed before the 2009 season, when the 4th category tournament in the Forrest Hills region of New York was closed for a long time due to funding problems. There was no quick find of those wishing to take this place on the calendar, and another New York tournament was moved this week - Bronx Open , which retained its place on the ITF calendar, but doubled its prize pool.
Two years later - before the 2011 season - the WTA was able to restore the second tournament the week before the US Open , after lengthy negotiations by signing a contract with the organizers from Texas . The new competition settled in the city of Grapevine , where ITF tournaments have been successfully held several times before.
Grapevine Tennis
The Grapevine Tennis Complex regularly hosts ITF tournaments . The competition was originally held in July, but in 2010 a second tournament was first created (held in late autumn), and then the summer competition was closed in favor of the WTA tournament .
Before the grapevine tournament, the WTA had already held its competitions in Texas : until 1995, a clay tournament was held in Houston , and until 1989, just next to the grapevine in Dallas , an indoor competition was held.
Enthusiasm for local organizers did not last long - in the spring of 2013 they announced the closure of their prize. [2]
General Information
The tournament takes place in steadily hot weather, because of this, most matches take place in the dark during artificial light.
Matches held on the central court are broadcast on the Internet . Semifinal and final matches are shown by an American tennis channel .
Winners and Finalists
The first champions of the tournament were three Europeans. Having won the single title in 2011, Sabina Lisicki gave her rivals for five matches only 13 games.
