Biography

Gennady Ivanovich Katarin was born on November 18, 1925 in the county town Onega of the Arkhangelsk province (now the city is the district center of the Arkhangelsk region of the Russian Federation ) in the family of an employee Ivan Vasilievich Katarin. Then, until the end of December 1943, he participated in defensive battles near Rudnya (from October 20, 1943, as part of the 1st Baltic Front ). At the end of December 1943, the 32nd Infantry Division was transferred to the Western Front and in the winter of 1944, the 33rd and 39th Armies fought heavy battles in the Vitebsk direction. At the end of February 1944, the division was withdrawn to the reserve of the Supreme High Command for rest and replenishment.

Again in the army G.I. Katarin from May 29, 1944. The division, in which Gennady Ivanovich served, was included in the 81st Rifle Corps of the 49th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front and began preparations for the Belarussian strategic operation . Before the start of the offensive, G.I. Katarin received the rank of senior sergeant and was appointed commander of the machine gun company.

On June 23, 1944, Operation Bagration began. The 322nd Infantry Regiment of the 32nd Infantry Division, which participated in the Mogilev Front Operation , was to force the Pronya River in the vicinity of the city of Gorki . However, at the very beginning of the offensive, the Germans managed to destroy the crossing. An enemy bunker located on the right bank of the river prevented her from recovering. Senior sergeant G.I. Katarin managed with his machine-gun crew to cross the river and, stealthily approaching the firing point of the enemy, machine guns to destroy the German soldiers who were in it. After this, Katarin’s calculation took a foothold on the right bank of the Prony and, reflecting the enemy’s counterattack, ensured the crossing of the regiment’s units.

The next water line on the way of the advancing regiment was the Basya River, which was to be overcome in the vicinity of the Belarusian village of Zhdanovichi . Trying to prevent the crossing of the river with parts of the Red Army, the Germans fired strong artillery and machine gun fire on the left bank. The enemy firing point located on the opposite bank was particularly disturbing. Despite the danger, Senior Sergeant G.I. Katarin, with his machine gun, advanced to the very edge of the river bank and with targeted fire destroyed the calculation of the enemy machine gun.

Developing the offensive, the 322nd Infantry Regiment reached the Dnieper River near the city of Shklov . On June 25, 1944, Senior Sergeant G.I. Katarin, with his calculation, was the first to force the river and, stealthily approaching the enemy bunker, destroyed his calculation, ensuring that the river was boosted by parts of the regiment. Subsequently, Gennady Ivanovich participated in the Minsk frontal operation , during which he crossed the Drut and Berezina rivers, and the liquidation of the enemy’s group surrounded by Minsk . On July 13, 1944, the 32nd Rifle Division was transferred to Lithuania and became part of the 19th Rifle Corps of the 50th Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front . On August 2, 1944, in the course of the Kaunas operation, in the battle on the outskirts of the Lithuanian city of Vilkaviskis, Senior Sergeant G.I. Katarin died. He was buried in the city of Marijampole, Republic of Lithuania .

For the exemplary performance of the combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown by the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, Senior Sergeant Katarin Gennady Ivanovich was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.
