Biography
Mikhail Vasilyev was born on October 29, 1918 in the village of Aleksandrovka (now Staritsky district of the Tver region ) in a peasant family. In 1934, he graduated from eight classes of secondary school, after which he worked in Leningrad . In August 1936, Vasiliev was called up to serve in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. In 1937 he graduated from the Eighth School of Military Pilots in Odessa , after which he was assigned to service in the Baltic Fleet aviation. He was a pilot of the 30th Assault Air Squadron, then - the 13th Fighter Aviation Regiment. From July 1938 Vasilyev was the chief of the paratrooper service of this regiment, from January 1940 - the flight commander in the same place. Took part in the Soviet-Finnish war. In 1941, Vasiliev joined the VKP (b) . From June 1941 - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. From March 20, 1942, the senior lieutenant Vasilyev commanded the 1st air squadron of the 4th Guards Fighter Aviation Regiment of the 61st Baltic Fleet Air Force Fighter Aviation Regiment [1] .
Took part in the defense of Tallinn , Hanko Peninsula , Leningrad . By April 1942, Vasilyev made 315 sorties, 29 of which were for attack, 6 for bombardment, 56 for reconnaissance. Took part in 28 air battles in which he destroyed 2 airplanes personally and 16 in a group. During the assault and bombardments, Vasilyev destroyed 10 vehicles, 16 motorcycles, 2 boats, about 500 soldiers and officers of the enemy [1] .
By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated June 14, 1942, Lieutenant Mikhail Vasiliev was awarded the Order of Lenin and a medal " for the exemplary performance of the combat tasks of the command on the front against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown by the guard ". Gold Star number 529 [1] .
May 4, 1943 Vasiliev was killed in an air battle near the island of Seskar in the Gulf of Finland . By that time, he had made 560 combat sorties, in which he shot down 4 airplanes personally and 20 in the group [1] .
He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner , the Order of the Patriotic War, 1 st degree [1] .
A street was named in honor of Mikhail Vasilyev in Vyborg and a memorial plaque was installed
