The founder of the state, Ethiop al-Muayyad Nasir al-Din Najah, was a freedman of the ruler of the state of Ziyadids . Around 1022, in the period of the weakening of the Ziyadid emirate of Najah, it consolidated in Zabid as an independent ruler. Al-Akhwal Said, the son and heir of Najah, waged a long war with the Sulayhid state with varying success. At the very beginning of his reign, the Sulayhids seized Zabid for some time. During the persistent struggle, al-Akhval Said managed to oust the Sulayhids from Zabid , capture Mecca and in 1067 kill the head of state Sulayhids ad-Dai Ali al-Sulayhi. In 1083, the Sulayhids again succeeded in capturing Zabid . The subsequent five-year war ended in the complete defeat and death of Amir al-Ahwal Saeed and the flight of his brother Jayash to India. The last two years managed to defeat the Sulaykhid troops and regain power over the emirate. Under the grandson of Jayash, Amir Fatik II (1124–1137), the religious and political movement of the Mahdids spread throughout Yemen. In 1144, the Mahdids revolted against Amir Fatik III (1137-1158), but were defeated and fled to the mountains. However, around 1158, Mahdidim succeeded in defeating the forces of Fatik III, seizing Zabid and putting an end to the state of Najahid.
