Chitrangada (wife of Arjuna)

Chitrangada ( v. चित्रांगदा , Chitrāngadā IAST ) is the heroine of the ancient Indian epic Mahabharata , one of the wives of Arjuna . During the period of the exile of the Pandavas , Arjuna went on a journey throughout India. During his wanderings, he visited the ancient Manipur - a mysterious kingdom famous for its natural beauty. There he met the daughter of the ruler Manipur Chitrangada and offered her his hand and heart. The ruler agreed to marry Chitrangada only on the condition that Arjuna would never take her or her unborn children outside of Manipur. The throne in Manipur was inherited through the female line and the king did not want his heirs to leave the kingdom. Arjuna agreed to the conditions and the wedding took place. A young couple had a son, Babruvahan , who subsequently succeeded his father as governor of Manipur.

In 1892, Rabindranath Tagore created, based on the story of Chitrangad, a dance drama [1] resembling a modern musical . [one]
