Red pine sawfly [1] ( lat. Neodiprion sertifer ) is a sawfly of the pine sawfly family . Known colloquially as a "false caterpillar." Pest of common pine throughout its range. Trans-Palaearctic species. An adult has a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The average body length is 6-8 mm. The males are black and shiny. Females are slightly larger and lighter, red-yellow-brown. Fertilized females lay 80-100 eggs in needles. Each distant clutch contains from 1 to 12 eggs. Most often, young shoots become the place of masonry. Eggs hibernate in deep diapause and withstand temperatures up to −40 ° C under snow. Adult adults emerge from cocoons in late summer or early fall. The larvae feed on the leaves and juices of the tree, thereby damaging its branches. Red pine sawfly is common in almost all of Europe, Siberia, Asia, Korea and Japan. It was introduced to North America about 50 years ago.
