Biography

The son of mathematician Joseph Soren, the nephew of theologian Eli Soren . In his youth, he worked as a lawyer for the Paris Parliament , but at the age of about 40, he resigned and focused on literary work [1] . He was a friend of Voltaire and Helvetius , the latter paid Soren a pension [2] . In 1761 he was elected to the French Academy .

Of the plays of Soren, the most famous are Spartak (1760) and Beverly (1768). “Spartacus” - one of the first works dedicated to the leader of the uprising of slaves and gladiators in Ancient Rome - was staged in almost all theatrical centers of Europe at that time and was highly appreciated by Voltaire, who considered the play worked out “in the workshop of the great Cornell” [3] . At the same time, Soren himself noted the continuity of his Spartacus to the images of Cornelian Nycomed and Sertorius [4] .

"Beverly" - a tragedy about a man obsessed with a passion for a card game - was a rework of E. Moore 's drama "The Player". In the 17th century, Soren’s play was staged several times in Russia (translated by I. A. Dmitrevsky ), and A. N. Radishchev reflected the impression of one of the productions in his “Diary of a Week” [5] .

In 1783, the Complete Works (Oeuvres complètes) of the writer was published (reprinted in 1812 with a biographical note by Fayol).
