Government of Lucas Papadimos

Lucas Papadimos

On November 6, 2011, amid a deep economic and political crisis, Jorgos Papandreou convened an emergency meeting with leaders of opposition parties. On the same day, he announced his intention to voluntarily resign as prime minister of the country [1] . At the end of the day, Papandreou and Anthony Samaras , the leader of the largest opposition party, New Democracy , agreed to create a coalition government of national unity, which will carry out a program to save the country from default [2] . The next extraordinary parliamentary elections are already scheduled for February 19, 2012 [3] .

Among the potential successors to Papandreou, Lucas Papadimos , the former head of the Central Bank of Greece and vice president of the European Central Bank, was considered the most likely [4] . Finally, he led the new government of a broad coalition. On April 11, 2012 , Lucas Papadimos during the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers announced the final date for early elections - May 6, 2012 [5] .
