Shanin, Alexander Mikhailovich

Alexander Mikhailovich Shanin ( 1898 - August 14, 1937 , Moscow ) - Soviet leader of the security agencies, commissar of state security of the 2nd rank ( 1935 ). Head of the transport department GUGB NKVD USSR. Shot in 1937 . He was not rehabilitated posthumously.

Biography

Shanin came from peasants, he graduated from the zemstvo elementary school. He began his career in 1904, working in a tavern. In 1915-1918 he served in the army in the rank ( ordinary 191 infantry regiment and flamethrower- chemical battalion ).

In 1918 he joined the Bolshevik party . In 1919-1920 he was in the Red Army . Since 1920 - in the state security organs. Until 1922, Shanin was the head of the personnel department of the Cheka’s Administrative Department, until 1930, he was the head of the Central Registry Department of the GPU-OGPU. At the same time, he served as secretary of the OGPU Secret Operations Directorate, secretary of the OGPU Board and deputy head of the Administrative and Organizational Directorate.

According to the proponent of the non-defector Georgy Agabekov , Shanin was a “criminal person with clearly sadistic inclinations” and in the late 1920s was a close associate of the then first deputy chairman of the OGPU, Heinrich Yagoda, as his personal bailiff, responsible for organizing various dark affairs, particular drinking bouts and revelry with prostitutes.

The last position before disgrace and arrest was an employee of the 6th department of the GUGB NKVD.

Arrest and Execution

On April 7, 1937, Shanin was removed from office for the period of internal verification of his involvement in the criminal activities of the former People's Commissar of the NKVD, Henry Yagoda. Arrested on April 22, 1937. Accused of participating in a counter-revolutionary conspiratorial organization within the NKVD. By order of the People's Commissar of Internal Affairs of the USSR Nikolai Yezhov No. 1138 dated July 8, 1937, he was dismissed from his earlier post and from service in general. On August 14, 1937, he was sentenced to liquidation “in a special order”. Executed on the same day. Posthumous rehabilitation denied.
