It originates in the southwest of Missouri, about 23 km northeast of the city of Nevada, on the border of the Bates and Vernon counties. Formed as a confluence of the Marais de Cignes and Little Osage rivers. Together with the Marais de Kignn River, Osage is over 800 km long. It flows first through the Harry Truman reservoir, 64 km long, and immediately below it, through the Ozarks reservoir, whose length is about 148 km. Below the dams, the river flows predominantly in a northeasterly direction and flows into Missouri 24 km east of the city of Jefferson City . The catchment of the river includes territory in eastern Kansas , as well as most of the west and central Missouri.
The river is named after the Osiji Indians who lived in these places at the time the Europeans came here. 2 river dams supply electricity for the St. Louis metropolitan area.
