Life and work

Stefan Lukyan was born in the family of Major Dumitru Lukyan. In 1873, his family moved to Bucharest. Since 1879, the future artist is studying in the capital’s gymnasium, and since 1885 - at the art school with Theodore Aman and George Tattarescu . At the same time, the young man enters the flute class of the Bucharest Conservatory. In 1889, S. Lukyan came to Germany and continued his education at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Professor Johann Caspar Gerterich . In 1891-1893, Lukyan lives in Paris. Here he enters the Julian Academy and learns from William Adolphe Bouguereau and Tony Robert-Fleury . The first known painting of the artist dates back to 1884.

The first exhibition of works by S. Lukyan took place in 1890 in Bucharest, in the Cercul artistic gallery (Circle of Artists) . After his return from Paris, he again exhibited his paintings at one of the Cercul artistic exhibitions. In 1894, S. Lukyan was elected to the jury of the Annual Exhibition of Living Artists (Expoziția anuală a artiștilor în viață) and participated in eight paintings. In 1894, he holds a joint exhibition in his workshop with Titus Alexandrescu and in 1895 with Konstantin Artachino . At the beginning of 1898, the artist exhibited 21 paintings at the exposition of the Ileana group. Between May and September of the same year, he paints the interior of the cathedral of the Romanian city of Alexandria. At the end of 1898 Sh. Lukyan became seriously ill. He suffers from an infectious infection of the spinal cord (he died of this disease later).

In May-June 1899, S. Lukyan makes wall paintings in the Tulchi Cathedral. In the same year he again exhibited his paintings at the Expoziția anuală a artiștilor în viață . In 1900, two of his paintings were on display at the Paris World Exhibition . In 1900, the first edition of the Revista literară și artistică “Ileana” (Literary and Artistic Review of the Ileana Group) was also published, in which Lukyan was a part that covered art. In May 1901, he exhibited 11 of his paintings at an art and sculptural exhibition in the Bucharest Athenaeum. At the end of the same year, he was in an extremely serious condition and half-paralyzed, he was transferred to the Panteleimon Hospital in Bucharest and was in it until March 1902.

In 1903, S. Lukyan participated in the international art exhibition in Athens, in 1904 he organized two personal exhibitions in the Bucharest Athenaeum. In 1905, the Hamburg Art Society for a long time exhibited his painting "Chrysanthemums." Further exhibited at the Athenaeum in 1907, 1908, 1910 and 1914. In 1909, Sh. Lukyan was awarded the 1st Class Medalia Bene Merenti . At the opening of the museum, A. Simu in Bucharest in 1911 showed 12 of his works. In 1911, the artist’s state of health worsened again, and he was sent for treatment to a sanatorium. In recent years, S. Lukyan has been almost completely paralyzed and painted his last paintings while sitting on a chair because of paralyzed legs, then his hands began to fail and the artist painted with a special elbow stand. Then the fingers ceased to obey and the hand was wound to him. In the last stages of the disease, S. Lukyan painted with a brush in his teeth. Recent works created by S. Lukyan date back to 1913. Due to false rumors that he was signing someone else’s canvases with his name, he was accused of deception and fraud.

In 1981, the film Luchian was directed about the artist’s life in Romania, directed by Nicolae Mergineanu , and Ion Caramitra played the main role.

He was buried in Bucharest at Bella Cemetery .
