History

The street was formed in the middle of the XIX century during the redevelopment of the Ploskoe area. In 1834, for the first time, the planned, but not yet built up Shchekova street was mentioned. In 1846, the street already exists under the modern name - from Mount Schekavitsa , near which it begins.

Development

According to the city schedule, Shchekavitskaya street belonged partially to the 2nd, partially to the 4th category. In 1914, transferred to the 1st category. The historical buildings consisted of both capital income, industrial and public buildings (in particular, the synagogue), and modest bourgeois manors. The building at the end of the XIX - beginning of the XX century was partially preserved at the beginning and at the end of the street (houses No. 3/9, 8, 34, 44). Modern residential development is represented mainly by "Stalin" and buildings of the 1980s — 2000s.

An architectural monument is the church of St. Dmitry of Rostov, which was part of the temple complex of Saints Constantine and Helena, destroyed in the 1930s. Building No. 6/8, at the intersection with Kirillovskaya Street, is the remains of the bell tower of the temple complex, in the lower tier of which there was the church of St. Dmitry, and the so-called Warm Temple. In the 1930s, the upper tiers of the bell tower were dismantled, and in the lower tier a gym was equipped for school No. 17. The bell tower was built in 1756-1758 by the architect I. G. Grigorovich-Barsky . The Warm Temple was built in 1863-1865 according to the project of architect P. I. Sparro .

Another monument of sacred architecture is the synagogue building (No. 29), which was built in 1895 by the architect Nikolai Gordenin and reconstructed in 1915 by Vladimir Ginzburg. From an architectural point of view, the building combined the features of Art Nouveau and of the British style. In 1929, the synagogue was closed and reopened in 1945. For about fifty years it was the only functioning synagogue in Kiev. In 2002, the next restoration and reconstruction of the synagogue was carried out.
