History
The club was founded on December 17, 1924 by a group of businessmen . During a trip to Sao Paulo, they played a football match against Santos . The match ended with the score 1: 1. After returning to Rio de Janeiro, they decided to officially register their football club. It was named after the Portuguese Santista , the second football club from Santos , as some of the founders of the team from Rio were Portuguese and sympathized with the Portuguese Santié.
In 1969, they beat the Spanish Real Madrid in a friendly game with a score of 2: 1. One of the most famous players of that squad was Escurinho , who spent the best part of his career playing for the Fluminense football club (Rio de Janeiro) and the national team of Brazil . Former club president Antonio Augusto di Abreu has served as club chairman for over 10 years, but following the 2010 election, Juan Maria do Regu Gonçalves became head of the club.
