“Between a Dog and a Wolf” is a postmodern novel by Sasha Sokolov , written in 1980 in the USA . According to critics, the world of the novel “Between a Dog and a Wolf” is a world of horror and chaos [1] . “Between a Dog and a Wolf” is an autobiographical novel, as Sasha Sokolov worked as a huntsman on the Volga [2] .

The very action of the novel takes place in the fictitious artel of the disabled named after D. Zatochnik, in Zavolchye - in the area beyond the Volga River. In Zavolchye there are villages of Gorodnishche, Bydogoshcha, Vyshelbaushi, Mylomomolovo. Residents of Zavolchye - grinders, recyclers, fishermen, huntsmen. The main character is Ilya Petrikeich Dzynzirela [3] [4] .
The novel contains 37 poetic inserts, which have the common name "Notes of the Hunter", which refers to the work of the same name by Turgenev . Each of them is equipped with a subtitle, indicating its genre, emotional or substantial orientation [5] .
Director Andrei Moguchy staged a play based on the novel [6] , for which he received the prize of the Novation contest and the Prize of critics and journalists [7] .
