Wingspan of 100-105 mm. Sexual dimorphism is not expressed. The proboscis is developed. Labial palps stick up. Forehead with a bun of hair. The antennae are simple. Spurs on lower legs small. The color is monotonous. Fore wings are monophonic, their color is jet black. The hind wings in the basal half and at the inner corner have a brick red field. The outer half of the hind wing is blackish-gray with a reddish tinge on the outer edge. At the bottom of the hind wings of the gloomy dipper, behind the central cell, behind the beginning of the Cu2 vein, there is a black spot, which is absent in the species of Ursa Karelin ( Axiopoena karelini ). At the same time, the Karelin dipper from the bottom of the hind wings has a developed subbasal black band, which is absent in the gloomy dipper . An additional curved spot near the rear corner of the hind wings is always found in the Karelin bear , and only occasionally can be found in the gloomy bear [1] .
Species are relatively widespread in Pakistan , Afghanistan , Turkmenistan and Transcaucasia , Abkhazia , Georgia , Armenia , in the north-west of India , in Iraq , Iran and Western Turkey . Within their entire range, the bears of this genus are associated with caves and grottoes, in which butterflies hide in the daytime. Flight time is in June. For a year it develops in one generation [1] .
