The guns date back to 1937, although most were produced in 1944-1945. It was de facto made up of parts of various weapons: the carriage was partially borrowed from the German PaK 35/36 and the Soviet 1-K . The barrel was taken from IG 42 .
The cannon could be used not only as a regimental weapon, but also as a means of fighting tanks. For this, a powerful anti-tank projectile weighing about 500 g was used, which pierced 85 mm thick armor at a right angle at a speed of 395 m / s. The first 84 guns were assembled in June 1944, during the war the Germans collected 1,304 such guns.
