Description

Fore wing length 32–38 mm. Wingspan 50–70 mm. The front wings are dark in color with a characteristic pattern of several white narrow stripes. The hind wings are bright yellow, with two or three black spots of different sizes in the center and at the outer edge. One of them is very small. Head and chest are black. Patagia with red and yellow borders. Abdomen is yellow-red. End of abdomen and longitudinal wide stripe of black color.

Range

The species range covers Central, Eastern and Southern Europe , Northern Kazakhstan , Mongolia ; northwest (northern Xinjiang ), northern ( Inner Mongolia ) and northeast China , Korea . It is found in Russia in the central and eastern regions of the European part, in the Urals, in Siberia south of the Arctic Circle, in almost the entire Far East , except for Chukotka, Kamchatka and the Sakhalin Region ; prefers taiga and forest zones. Occurs infrequently, but in some places the view is not uncommon.

The flight time of butterflies in June-July, in the north of the range - early August.

The caterpillar is black, densely pubescent with bunches of grayish hairs. After molting, they become dark blue for a while. Caterpillars are polyphages (polyphagous), feed on leaves of soybean , dash , cucumbers and other industrial and vegetable crops; also live on various shrubs, including cotoneaster ; sometimes honeysuckle leaves are damaged [1] .

The doll is brown. On the abdomen there are several bright orange rings. On the day of hatching the butterfly from the pupa, the rings become more visible.
