Physical Properties
Benzyl lithium forms light yellow crystals. The ethereal solution is yellow-brown; the solution in tetrahydrofuran is dark yellow.
With the access of air, the crystals quickly osmoshilayut with darkening.
In the ethereal solution, benzyl lithium dimerizes (LiCH 2 C 6 H 5 ) 2 , in tetrahydrofuran monomer.
It is poorly soluble in hydrocarbon solvents.
Chemical Properties
- Reacts with halogenated hydrocarbons, such as benzyl chloride :
Application
- Used in industry as a catalyst for the polymerization of dienes .
- In organic synthesis.
