Wingspan 50-60 mm ^[1] . The color of the front wings can vary from gray to dark brown. The bud-like spot on the front wings is always almost black, a ring-shaped spot in the light border, of the same color as the background of the wings themselves, or lighter and without border. On the front wings may be a pattern formed by wavy lines, dark strokes and spots. At the top of the wing are two black spots. The rear wings are yellow-red in color, with a black sling running at the outer edge of the wing.

The species range extends from Western Europe to Western Siberia , Central Asia , northwestern India , and North Africa . The species was introduced to North America , where it is found and almost everywhere throughout the continent with the exception of Greenland and the Caribbean . Butterflies are found in forests, meadows, arable lands, steppe slopes, parks, gardens, marshes, pastures, and occasionally in steppes ^[1] .

The period of the butterfly's flight is from May to July and September — October ^[1] .

The caterpillar is characterized by a color ranging from off-white to dark brown with three light lines on the back and corbels formed by dark spots. It feeds on many shrubs and herbaceous plants, including dandelion , sorrel , grapes , cabbage, onions , beets , calendula , chrysanthemum , dahlia, and many others ^[1] .
