Biography

Born in Vienne (historical area of Dauphine ); the son of the prosecutor of the Vienna court, he studied law in Valence , where he received his doctorate (1639). Engaged in law practice in his hometown; later he was the royal prosecutor at the commission established in Dauphine to search for appropriating noble titles.

His moral qualities were unsightly. So, in 1661 he stole from the archive of the Grenoble bishop 3 cartularia (scroll) of St. Gugon was not ashamed to resell them at a good price to the bishop, Cardinal Le Camus.

Shorye intended to write “The History of Dauphiné”; first of all he published the Projet de l'Histoire du Dauphiné (Project of Dauphine's History; 1654). The “History” itself appeared no earlier than 1661 under the heading “Histoire générale du Dauphiné” (General History of Dauphine; 1661–72, 2 vols.). This essay is valuable in its abundance of information, often based on documents now lost. But Shorye lacked criticism, and most importantly, literary honesty: if he came across documents that contradicted his theory or fabrications, he corrected them, or even simply kept silent. The publication "Histoire du Dauphiné" alarmed the king , recalling the former privileges and liberties of Dauphine ́, and therefore in 1662 Shorye was forbidden to continue publication. On the contrary, the Dauphine states voted to award the author a prize of 500 livres at the end of 1661 , but the king did not give his consent.

Erotic

  • “Aloisia, or Louise Sigea’s Dialogues on the Sacraments of Amur and Venus ” ( lat. Aloïsiae Sigeae Toletanae satira sotadica de arcanis amoris. Aloïsia hispanice scripsit, latinitate donavit J. Meursius ; 1659 ; French edition of 1681 )
Edition History

In 1659-60. in Lyon was printed in several copies, only for friends, a small book. Neither year nor place of publication was indicated; concluded 6 dialogues; Subsequently, Shorye added another 7th dialogue.

In 1678, Aloïsia was reprinted, also without indicating the place and year, in Grenoble , at the bookseller Nicola. The 3rd edition appeared in Geneva under the title "J. Meursii Elegantiae latini sermonis. " There are already 7 dialogs in this edition. Further publications: Amsterdam (1757), Leiden , London (1781), Paris (1885).

There are numerous French translations, of which the best is published by Liseux (1881–82, 4 volumes). The 1678 edition caused a great scandal, so the bookseller Nicola had to close the shop. They searched for the name of the author: it was easy to find out that Aloïsia and Meursius had nothing to do with it. However, from the very beginning, the suspicions fell on Shorye, as there were people who saw a copy of the 2nd edition and even proofreading sheets of the 1st with Shorye's own amendments.
