Guangdong-Guangxi War

The Guangdong-Guangxi War , or the First and Second Wars of the Yue-Gui ( Chinese trade. 粵 桂 戰爭 , ex. 粵 桂 战争 , pinyin : yuè guì zhànzhēng , pall .: Yue gui zhanzheng ), took place between the Chinese revolutionary party and the old clique Guangxi .

First War

When Sun Yat-sen , the head of the Chinese Revolutionary Party, tried to restore his power in Guangzhou in 1917 , General Lu Runting reluctantly supported him for several years. After Sun stepped out of the old Guangxi clique because of disagreement over the deployment of troops, he tried to lure the soldiers of Tsen Chunxuan , one of General Lu's main allies in Guangdong, to the side of the more devoted Chen Chen Junming , the local general who financed Sun. Sun Yat-sen then ordered Chen to attack Lu and other Guangxi generals. In October 1920, Chen captured Guangzhou and ousted the Guangxi generals from Guangdong.

Second War

In 1921, Chen decided to unite the territories around Guangdong under the rule of Sun and invaded Guangxi. Lu sent two armies against him — one under the command of his wife’s younger brother, Tan Haoming , and the other under Shen Hongying . These forces drove Chen away and captured Qinzhou and Lianzhou . However, Lu Chen Binghun's ally was defeated, losing to Wuzhou and allowing Chen Junming to invade Guangzhou along the rivers, while the allies advanced from the north. Lu Junting was forced to resign in July 1921. By August, Chen had captured Nanning and the rest of Guangxi.

Consequences

Although Chen Junming and the Guangdong forces occupied Guangxi until April 1922 , their occupation was only nominal. The armed gangs of the Guangxi loyalists continued to gather under the command of local commanders, calling themselves the Army of Self-Government. Sun Yat-sen and Chen Junming soon disagreed on the plans for the Northern Campaign . By May 1922, the Guangdong troops had left Guangxi, leaving Cheng province. However, Sun Yat-sen returned later for the reform of the National Government.
