Biography
Dmitry Vasiliev was born on October 26, 1904 in the village Obruchevka (now - Kizilsky district of the Chelyabinsk region ) in a peasant family. He graduated from elementary school. In 1927 - 1932 he served in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. After the demobilization, Vasiliev worked as chairman of the Pakhtakor district council of Osoaviahim of the Samarkand region of the Uzbek SSR . In 1941, he was re-drafted into the army. Since December of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He took part in the battles on the Bryansk , Voronezh , Western and 1st Ukrainian fronts. In 1942, Vasiliev joined the CPSU (b) . By the beginning of 1944, Vasiliev commanded a squadron of the 50th Guards Cavalry Regiment of the 13th Guards Cavalry Division of the 6th Guards Cavalry Corps of the 13th Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front. He distinguished himself during the liberation of the Volyn region of the Ukrainian SSR [1] .
On January 31, 1944, during the battle for the Tsuman village of the Kivertsy district, Vasiliev's squadron managed to capture the crossing over the Tsuman river and captured the village, pushing back the enemy units. German troops launched a counterattack, cutting off the cavalry from the main forces. For 18 hours they fought surrounded, repulsing 18 enemy counterattacks. During these battles, the squadron destroyed more than 400 enemy soldiers and officers, 5 vehicles with ammunition, 4 bunkers . Vasiliev was wounded twice in the battles, but did not leave the battlefield, continuing to lead the actions of his unit, personally destroying about 50 German soldiers and officers. Raising the fighters to the attack, Vasiliev contributed to the breakthrough of the encirclement of the environment. In this battle, Vasiliev died. He was buried in a mass grave in the village of Kolka, Manevichsky District [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of August 25, 1944 for captain Dmitry Vasiliev posthumously awarded the high rank of Hero of the Soviet Union for the “exemplary performance of command missions of the command at the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown” of the guard. He was also awarded the Orders of Lenin , World War 1 and 2 degrees, two orders of the Red Star . In honor of Vasilyev, a street was named in Tsumani, monuments to the Hero were erected at the place of death and in the village of Aktash in the Samarkand region [1] .
