Biography

Born on January 4, 1860 in Abo , in the Grand Duchy of Finland.

From 1869 to 1879 he studied at the art school in Abo, and later as a creative practice from 1878 to 1880 and from 1881 to 1886 in Düsseldorf at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts . He was the last of the galaxy of Finnish artists of the Dusseldorf school. His teachers were Andreas Müller , Hugo Crola and Eugen Dücker .

From 1888 to 1890 he studied in Paris with Jules Joseph Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger .

As a painter he made his debut in 1876. He participated in many exhibitions in Finland (in 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897, 1899, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1904, 1905, 1909). After the death of the artist, his great retrospectives were held in Finland in 1924 and 1954.

It was exhibited at exhibitions in Venice (1897), Paris (1900 and 1908), Moscow (1917) and Copenhagen (1919). After death, the artist’s paintings were presented at exhibitions in Kiel, Germany in 1929, Milan and Rome, Italy in 1937, Moscow and Leningrad, the USSR in 1953 and 1954 and in China in 1958.

He was a teacher of the art school in Abo and headed it as a director. From 1891 to 1919 he was the first curator of the art collection of the Art Museum in Abo .

In his work he was influenced by impressionism . He sang the beauty and severe grandeur of his native nature ( Åland Islands , 1909, Art Museum , Turku; Köcker Church on the Alands , 1908, Atheneum , Helsinki).

 
 
 
 

He died on November 19, 1919 in Turku .
