Manam is an active volcano on the island of the same name , in Papua New Guinea . The volcano is located in the New Guinean Sea , 13 km from the northern coast of New Guinea. Administratively, the territory is part of the province of Madang . It is a basalt - andesitic stratovolcano . The earliest known documented data on a volcanic eruption date back to 1616. [2] Pyroclastic flows during eruptions sometimes reach the sea coast. In 2004, the local population of 9,000 people was evacuated from the island to the coast due to the newly begun eruption. There are currently no permanent residents on the island. Of the animals in the vicinity of the volcano you can find Polynesian rats and small foxes .
