Biography
Geraldine Sue Page was born in Kirksville, Missouri . She studied at the Goodman Theater School of Drama in Chicago , and also studied acting with renowned Uta Hagen in New York .
Her acting debut took place at the age of 17, and in the early 1950s she already began to appear on the theatrical stage of New York. In 1953, she won the World Theater Award for her role in the production of "In the Middle of Summer". In 1960, she was first nominated for the Tony Award for her role in the Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' play, The Sweet Bird of Youth, where Paul Newman played the lead male role. In 1963, the play was filmed, and Page, playing the same role there, was nominated for an Academy Award . Previously, she was twice nominated for an Oscar for roles in the films Hondo (1953) and Summer and Smoke (1961).
For the next three decades, Geraldine Page continued to play a lot on Broadway , receiving three more nominations for Tony in 1975, 1982 and 1987. Despite the relatively small filmography, the actress was nominated four more times for the Academy Award for her role in the films “You Are Now a Big Boy” (1966), Pete and Tilly (1972), Interiors (1978) and The Godfather Greenwich Village (1984). In 1986, considering herself a seven-time loser in the race for the Oscars, Geraldine Page received the coveted Academy Award for her role as Mrs. Carrie Watts in the movie "A Trip to the Bountiful."
Over the years of her career, the actress also worked a lot on television, where she performed in a number of television series, including “Long Hot Summer”, “Medical Center”, “Ghost Stories” and “Endless Love”. Madame Medusa also spoke in her voice in the Disney animated film Rescuers (1977).
From 1954 to 1957, Page was married to violinist Alexander Schneider. In 1963, she married actor Rip Thorne , who was 7 years younger than her. They had three children, a daughter (actress Angelica Thorne) and twin sons.
Geraldine Page died in New York from a heart attack on June 13, 1987 at the age of 62.
