The name of the village means Old Lichen, often simply called Lichen. The name comes from the Slavic pagan deity Likho, whose sanctuary was located nearby.
The largest church in Poland is located in Lichen Old. It is the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lichen , completed in 2004, which houses the icon of the Virgin Mary , called the Grieving Virgin, Queen of Poland . The basilica was built counting on a large number of pilgrims who come to worship the image of the Virgin Mary, which is considered miraculous.
