Biography
Matthias Zimmermann was born on May 6, 1981 in the city of Basel, where he spent his childhood and studied at school. Later he studied music at the Higher School of Music in Bern on the subject of art and composition, at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Zurich (art and communication), as well as the theory of art education at the University of Zurich. Matthias began his career by writing symphonic music and compositions for chamber orchestras. The compositional techniques that he used to create his works and the analysis of classical music (sonata-allegro forms, polyphony, note recording, etc.) gradually aroused interest in the artist in the visual arts based on the forms and motifs typical of musical works . Later, Matthias begins to engage in fine art in earnest, creating works that combine painting using digital techniques. In Moscow, the works of Matthias Zimmerman are presented in the 11:12 Gallery. Works
The plot, concept and implementation
Before the artist moves his work to the canvas, a long creative process is carried out, which begins with sketches reflecting the general image of future work. Then comes the digitization of the resulting image on the canvas, its virtual revision, and the last stages - high-quality acrylic printing on canvas and varnishing. The combination of different techniques in the process of creating work allows you to develop a dialogue between different disciplines and approaches in art. The images themselves can be seen as a game of color and shape, which lead the viewer to new amazing discoveries. Using new technologies, Matthias Zimmermann creates works combining painting and digital media. In the works from the Model Worlds series, landscapes are primarily spatial constructions. These landscapes depict virtual worlds in which the color and geometry of space are clearly balanced. The objects of work are both completely fictional and real-life places and buildings. Together, they act as models of the real world. Sources of inspiration for the artist are Japanese gardens, pyramids, lakes, mountains, cities - topographic objects from around the world. The artist himself says the following about his works: “Something from the series“ Model Worlds ”resembles the Chinese game of Tangram. At the heart of the game is the task of depicting objects, figures and hieroglyphs with just seven basic figures. It can be said that a limited number of basic forms are also used in the Model Worlds. Thus, each model has its own basic form, with predetermined norms. These norms are associated with the properties of each form, its possibilities of interaction and combination with other forms, and with the general mutual combination of all forms as a whole. This creates a kind of "alphabet of forms", which forms my model landscapes. " [5]
