Biography
In February 1847, after the start of the US-Mexican War , James Trocmorton volunteered to join the 1st Texas Regiment. A few months later he was appointed an assistant surgeon for the Texas Rangers , and in June of the same year he was discharged from military service for health reasons.
In 1861, at the time of the Texas convention, Trocmorton was one of only eight delegates who voted against leaving the US state.
During his tenure as governor, Trokmorton tolerated former confederates , and his attitude to civil rights faced the reconstruction policies of the radical Republicans in the US Congress . In this way, he incurred the wrath of Major General Charles Griffin , who soon convinced his boss, Philip Sheridan , to remove Trocmorton from his post and to appoint a more loyal Republican Elisha Pease to replace him.
In the mid-1870s, after the influence of the radical Republicans began to decline, Trocmorton was elected to the US Congress from the 3 rd Texas constituency.
James Trocmorton died of kidney disease in 1894.
