In the early 1980s, in Hernani , near San Sebastian, Chillida and his wife bought a Basque farm with sixteenth-century buildings and surrounding land to create a permanent place to showcase their work in the natural environment. The open-air museum, where visitors could wander among the sculptures, was opened in the 1990s and was named "Chillida Leku" (in Basque, leku means "place").
