General Information
Championship History
In the 1990s, broadcasts of the British Touring Championship gained considerable popularity in many countries of Europe and, in particular, in Sweden. Soon, Sweden, which also had many strong enough racers and teams, created its own national championship. In addition to the main touring championship, several monocups, a karting series and a motorcycle championship were created (Superbike class equipment was used).
In 1998, in order to encourage participants not affiliated with major automakers, the series introduced a separate standings for independent pilots.
The new championship quickly gained popularity and attracted the attention of sponsors. Soon the series began to be widely publicized on national television. In 1998, the non-Swedish brand became the strongest manufacturer for the first time, three years later the pilot won the championship for the first time, representing not one of the two title countries.
In 2010, the series was combined with the Danish Championship . In the first year of the new championship, which retained the STCC brand (now true as the Scandinavian championship), Swedish touring survived and revealed its last champion, but in 2011, when the new project showed its viability, the national championship was finally closed.
In the last years of its existence, the team winners received additional funding from the organizers of the series.
Rules
Since 2003, only Super 2000 class cars (as in the then World Championships ), as well as national category cars - N2000 (without homologation from the FIA ) were allowed to start the series.
Such rules allowed the participants in the series to prepare for participation in the series not only the technology of the Swedish concern Volvo , but also the products of Alfa Romeo , BMW , Chevrolet and SEAT , which were very popular at that time. In addition, Mercedes-Benz , Opel and Volkswagen brands participated in the races.
Weekend Format
Each racing weekend includes a qualification and two races.
Qualification consists of two segments: in the first of them, the starting field is determined for pilots who have shown times from the ninth and slower; the second segment (the so-called Superpole ) determined the alignment of pilots in the first eight: a group of pilots started in direct order relative to the results they showed in the first race and in the opposite - in the second.
Each race started on the move and lasted about 20 minutes.
Spectacle system
The series borrowed the system used in the championships under the auspices of the FIA . Only one change was made - full-weighted points were awarded for places in both races. With the equality of points, the pilot who finished higher in the last race became higher.
- The detailed points scheme in the last year of the series is as follows:
| one | 2 | 3 | four | five | 6 | 7 | eight | 9 | ten | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Race | 25 | 18 | 15 | 12 | ten | eight | 6 | four | 2 | one |
Pop Culture Series
In 1999 and 2000, Electronic Arts released 2 series of STCC car simulator based on racing series.
